Why Does the Media Keep Encouraging Hamas Violence?

Why Does the Media Keep Encouraging Hamas Violence? (Op/Ed)

If this were the first time that Hamas deliberately provoked Israel into self-defense actions that resulted in the unintended deaths of Gaza civilians, the media could be excused for playing into the hands of Hamas. The most recent Hamas provocations -- having 40,000 Gazans try to tear down the border fence and enter Israel with Molotov cocktails and other improvised weapons -- are part of a repeated Hamas tactic that I have called the "dead baby strategy." Hamas' goal is to have Israel kill as many Gazans as possible so that the headlines always begin, and often end, with the body count. Hamas deliberately sends women and children to the front line, while their own fighters hide behind these human shields.

Hamas leaders have long acknowledged this tactic. Fathi Hammad, a Hamas Member of the Palestinian Legislative Council, stated as far back as 2008:

"For the Palestinian people, death has become an industry, at which women excel, and so do all the people living on this land. The elderly excel at this, and so do the mujahideen and the children. This is why they have formed human shields of the women, the children, the elderly, and the mujahideen, in order to challenge the Zionist bombing machine. It is as if they were saying to the Zionist enemy: 'we desire death like you desire life.'"

Hamas used this tactic to provoke two wars with Israel in which their fighters fired rockets from civilian areas, including hospitals, schools and mosques. When Israel responded, it tried its best to avoid civilian casualties, dropping warning leaflets, calling residents of potential targets and dropping non-lethal noise bombs on the roofs of houses that were being used to launch rockets and store explosives. Inevitably, some civilians were killed, and the media blamed Israel for these deaths, despite the precautions it had taken.

The same was true when Hamas built terror tunnels used to kidnap Israeli civilians. The entrances to these tunnels were in civilian areas as well, including mosques and schools. Using their own civilians as human shields, while targeting Israeli civilians, is a double war crime. Yet, the media generally focuses on Israel's reaction to these war crimes, rather than Hamas' war crimes.

The cruel reality is that every time Israel accidentally kills a Gaza civilian, Israel loses. And every time Israel kills a Gaza civilian, Hamas wins. Israelis grieve every civilian death its army accidentally causes. Hamas benefits from every death Israel accidentally causes. That is why it encourages its women and children to become martyrs.

Calling this the "dead baby strategy" may seem cruel, because it is cruel. But don't blame the messenger for accurately describing this tactic. Blame those who cynically use it. And blame the media for playing into the hands of those who use it by reporting only the body count and not the deliberate Hamas tactic that leads to one-sided body counts.

It is true that Gaza is in a desperate situation and that it is wounded. But the wound is self-inflicted. When Israel ended its occupation of the Gaza Strip -- removing every single soldier and settler -- Gaza could have become the Singapore of the Mediterranean. It is a beautiful area with a large seacoast. It received infusions of cash and other help from Europe. Israel left behind agricultural equipment and greenhouses. But instead of using these resources to feed, house and educate its citizens, Hamas built rockets and terror tunnels. It threw dissenters off roofs and murdered members of the Palestinian Authority who were willing to recognize Israel and negotiate with it.

Hamas rejects the two-state solution or any solution that leaves Israel intact. Its only solution is violence, and the events at the fence these past days are a manifestation of that violence. Would any country in the world allow 40,000 people, sworn to its destruction, to knock down a border fence and attack its citizens living peacefully near the border? Of course not. Could Israel have done more to reduce casualties among those trying to breach the border fence? I don't know, and neither do the legions of armchair generals that are currently criticizing Israel for the steps it took to prevent a catastrophe among the residents of villages and towns that are proximate to the border fence.

One thing is crystal-clear: Hamas will continue to use the dead baby strategy as long as the media continues to report the deaths in the manner in which it has reported them in recent weeks. Many in the media are complicit in these deaths because their one-sided reporting encourages Hamas to send innocent women and children to the front line.

Perhaps Israel could do a better job in defending its civilians, but it is certain that the media can do a better job in accurately reporting the Hamas strategy that results in so many innocent deaths.

There is a marvelous cartoon that illustrates the difference between Hamas and Israel. It shows an Israeli soldier standing in front of a baby carriage with a baby in it, shielding the baby. Then it shows a Hamas terrorist standing behind a baby carriage with the baby in it, using the baby to shield him. This cartoon better illustrates the reality that is occurring at the Gaza fence than most of the "objective" reporting by the media.

The mainstream media is absolutely anti-Israel.  As I pointed out the the other day the example of the headline:

"Israel Launches Massive Military Strike Against Iranian Targets in Syria"  on mainstream MSN news:

The headline did not indicate it was in retaliation of a missile attack on Israel so its purpose was to blame Israel for making an unprovoked attack. It was not until the third paragraph did the story mention that it was in retaliation for 20 missiles fired at Israel from an Iranian base in Syria.

I was the Editor-in-Chief of my university newspaper for almost two years, and I'm quite cognizant of the proper technique for writing a news story, with the 1st paragraph summarizing the main points, followed by lesser and lesser important paragraphs. There is actually a reason for that - because sometimes it is required to cut shorter a story to fit the page, and the paragraphs that are cut are therefore the least important.  As well, the headline must never be misleading, but will in as few words as possible tell the bare bones of what the story will say. For example, here are what would be a fair headline for the story:

"Israel Bombs Iranian Bases in Syria Retaliating for Missile Attack" or "Missiles Fired From Iranian Bases in Syria Cause Israeli Retaliation"  (in each case the same number of words as the actual headline).

However, not only did MSN mislead the readers, many of whom only read headlines, and many others do not read he whole story, so they will be misled into thinking "Those fucking Israelis, trying to start a war." when in fact the real reason for Israel's retaliation was to disable the Iranian bases in Syria from starting a war through its provocations.

It's so easy for the media to mislead the public, and as I have seen, the mainstream media is doing exactly what Dershowitz said they are doing and at the same time making everything look as if it's all Israel's fault.

No wonder anti-Semitism is increasing all over the world - thanks to the mainstream media.  This is a very apt cartoon that was posted on another article - it shows graphically just what I mean.

Buzz, with the current generation of "journalists" they would thinik you are speaking blasphemy.  It is all about getting your headline to the front and getting your by-line published, as the 24/7 newscycle will make the story disappear quickly, less if you can tittelate the senses a bit by making a catchy, 'politically correct' (anti-anything Israel does) headline.  WHy be truthful when we can slant stuff the way we want to?

/sarc off.

Hey Buzz.. great article, thanks for posting it

Open this link, and read the headlines from Aljazeera....

Found this read to be interesting..

News of Terrorism and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict (May 2-8. 2018)

This week as well, the violent incidents initiated by the Palestinians, mainly Hamas, continued along the border between the Gaza Strip and Israel. The climax was on Friday, May 4, 2018, when dozens of Palestinian rioters broke into the Palestinian side of the Kerem Shalom border crossing, which serves as the Gazans’ lifeline, damaging equipment and gas and fuel storage facilities.

The organizers of the marches are preparing for this Friday’s events (May 11, 2018), and at the same time are preparing for the climax of the events in mid-May: May 14 (the transfer of the US Embassy to Jerusalem) and May 15 (Nakba Day). The intention is to organize a large mob (tens or hundreds of thousands) that will break into Israeli territory. This will be accompanied by violent events, even at the cost of many losses (which will increase the international media impact of the event).

Hamas media repeatedly calls on residents of Judea and Samaria to join the marches and invent new fighting tactics to be used against the settlements (such as the Molotov kites). In practice, the relative calm in Judea and Samaria and among Israeli Arabs continues, but this is liable to change due to the accumulation of events in mid-May.

“The Great Return March:” increasing violence on the fifth Friday of the demonstrations

The acts of violence of the “Great Return March” continued on Friday, May 4, 2018, the sixth Friday since the violent demonstrations began on March 30, 2018. Around 10,000 demonstrators (similar to the number of participants last week) participated in the Friday demonstrations in six locations near the security fence on the border between Israel and the Gaza Strip[1]. During the demonstrations, the violent incidents continued: burning tires, throwing stones and IEDs, attempting to sabotage the security fence, and sending Molotov kites into Israeli territory (IDF Spokesperson’s Office, May 5, 2018). During the demonstrations, a hand grenade was thrown at an IDF force near the Karni crossing (northern Gaza Strip). In addition, two attempts by Palestinians to sabotage the security fence and cross over into Israeli territory were thwarted. According to reports by the Health Ministry in the Gaza Strip, there were no fatalities during Friday’s events and 1,143 people were injured (mainly from smoke inhalation, in the ITIC’s assessment).

What else would anyone expect from Al Jezeera?  Ha'aretz would be a good competitor for their bias.

Every time I read Aljazeera, I realize that American media, while headline shopping is taking news from them, but credit a different American news outlet or source rather than Aljazeera - the bias in reporting is not a mystery  .............  I check times and dates of most everything I read...

I watched Dershowitz discuss this and fully agree with him. A couple of days ago, some well-known, seemingly educated left-wing NewsTalkers members asked me for proof that left wing media manipulate Israeli/Hamas reporting (as well as photographs/videos) in Hamas' favor. I couldn't believe that they didn't know about this.

Thanks for seeding an excellent article, Buzz.

He's right of course. I can't explain why our media won't report the truth. Unfortunately, this notion that Israel is trying to commit genocide against the Palestinians is very popular now on college campuses. All you need is a little common sense to realize how untrue this is. Just compare the military power and you realize that

"> if Israel wanted the Palestinians dead, they would be already.

Because the left wing media is anti-Israel.

Unfortunately, this notion that Israel is trying to commit genocide against the Palestinians is very popular now on college campuses.

Many of today's college students get their "facts" only from left wing sources. They've also stated that they'd rather date a convicted felon rather than a Trump supporter. They also believe that socialism and communism are good - they've obviously never learned about how citizens are treated in the (former) USSR, NoKo, China, Cuba, Venezuela, etc.

that Israel is trying to commit genocide against the Palestinians

They all forget that the charters of Hamas and Hezbollah and the PLO all call for the total destruction of the State of Israel and the Jewish people. To the best of my knowledge there are no such declarations concerning the Palestinians in anything from the Israeli governing documents.

This is what parents who really loved their children would do to keep their children out of danger.  Not so much in Gaza or even in the USA these days.  Parents often bring their children to violent protests with them.

remember that many of those Palestinian parents think it is an honor for them to have their children "martyred" in support of their cause.

Hamas rejects the two-state solution or any solution that leaves Israel intact.

That's false.   In fact it's the Likud party of Netanyahu which rejects a two-state solution.   It's a core element of their platform.
